Private, but open to as much daylight as possible. Grounded, but stretching high to capture views of the Olympic mountains and Puget Sound from every floor. Modern, but timeless enough to hold a treasure trove of family antiques. Each of these requests underpin the design for this new home for two retirees in the Richmond Beach neighborhood north of Seattle. A two-story gabled volume wrapped in shingles defines the main living and entertaining spaces; surrounding flat-roof and single-story extensions enclose rooms and decks intended for taking in the view or reading a good book. Interior spaces are light and bright, focused on the water and mountains beyond. Details include a cast-in-place concrete fireplace, Douglas Fir custom cabinetry, custom steel and fir elements at the interior, and architectural concrete and steel edging and planters in the landscape.
